Unlike cattle or sheep, horses are flight animals. When startled, they run into barriers at full speed, so fencing that offers no flex can cause serious lacerations or blunt-force injuries. Barbed wire is a particularly poor choice, and brazed or spot-welded wire mesh creates a hoof entrapment risk that most horse owners don’t consider until it’s too late. The right fencing needs to hold up against cribbing and rubbing without splintering or developing sharp edges over time. Height is equally important. Mares and geldings need at least five feet of clearance, and stallions need six, so a standard four-foot cattle fence won’t provide adequate containment.

Woven wire with openings no larger than three inches square is widely considered the safest option for horses because it prevents hoof entrapment and holds up as a solid barrier. Barbed wire is a poor fit due to laceration risk, and rigid steel pipe offers no flex on impact, which can cause injury when a horse runs into it.
Plan for at least five feet for mares and geldings, and six feet for stallions. A four-foot fence might work for cattle, but horses will clear it when something spooks them.
T-posts work well as line posts strung with woven wire and are a practical, cost-effective option for perimeter and pasture runs. For corners, gate posts, and brace points, you’ll want heavier posts to handle the added load and tension.
Generally, no. Welds can fail under pressure, and broken ends create sharp edges that pose a real risk to horses. Knotted woven wire is the better option for horse enclosures.
