How to Install Livestock Panels on Rough Terrain

Rough terrain is the reality for most ranchers. Rocky ground, hillsides, and uneven pastures don’t stop livestock from needing containment, and they shouldn’t stop you from getting panels in the ground. Assess the Fence Line Before You Set a Single Post

Walk the full fence line first. Note the slope direction, any rock outcroppings, drainage paths, and the worst high-and-low transitions. This tells you where you’ll need intermediate posts, where panels will need to step down, and where ground gaps are likely.

Two approaches work on rough terrain:

  • Follow the contour: let panels step down the slope in sections
  • Grade small sections: flatten short stretches with hand tools where the terrain is workable

Fighting the land costs more time than it saves. Panels that follow the contour are more stable than panels forced into a level line on uneven ground.

Post Placement on Slopes and Rocky Ground

On flat ground, post placement is straightforward. On rough terrain, it takes more thought.

Spacing and Depth

Standard 8-to-10-foot spacing works on moderate terrain. On steep slopes or in loose soil, tighten that spacing to reduce panel sagging and side load on each post. In rocky ground where you can’t drive a post to full depth, dig wider and use more concrete to compensate.

Keeping Posts Plumb

Every post must be plumb, regardless of the slope angle. A post that leans with the hillside creates a twisted, bowed panel that loosens over time. Use a post level on every set, not just the corner posts.

Key points for slope-specific post work:

  • The uphill post carries more lateral load, so drive it deeper or add a diagonal brace
  • T-posts handle moderate terrain well; on severe slopes or in sandy or loose soil, use steel posts set in concrete
  • After heavy rain, check post bases for erosion and fill any washout before it undermines the set

Attaching Panels to Uneven Ground

Panels won’t hang uniformly when the ground underneath them isn’t level. That’s expected. Work with it.

Top-Down Attachment

Attach the top of the panel to the post first, let the panel hang naturally, then work down to the middle and bottom connection points. This prevents you from binding the panel into a shape it won’t hold.

Use chain or wire ties with multiple adjustment points so you can raise or lower each panel section to minimize ground gaps without forcing the panel out of alignment.

Stepping Panels on Slopes

On a consistent slope, step panels rather than running them at a continuous angle. Each panel section drops slightly from the one above it. This keeps individual panels closer to plumb and reduces stress on the clips and ties at each connection.

Managing Gaps Under Panels

Gaps under panels are the main challenge on rough terrain. How much gap you can tolerate depends on what you’re running.

  • Cattle and horses: gaps under 6 inches are generally not a problem
  • Sheep and goats: these animals will find every weak spot, so tighter tolerances matter; our sheep and goat panels are built for that kind of pressure

Practical Gap Fixes

  • Fill low spots with compacted soil or gravel, fast and cheap
  • Attach a section of welded wire or field fence along the panel bottom in problem areas
  • Place feed and water away from gap-prone sections to reduce animal pressure at weak points

Avoid adding a wooden bottom rail across drainage paths. Where water runs through, leave panels slightly above grade rather than blocking flow and risking erosion around your post bases.

Handling Drainage and Erosion

Slope installations accelerate erosion around post bases. A few habits prevent bigger problems down the road:

  • Identify natural drainage channels before you install and don’t run panels directly across them
  • Where panels must cross drainage paths, install slightly above grade
  • Check the full fence line after the first significant rain and fill any washout immediately
  • On steep runs, orient panels parallel to the slope when possible to reduce water pooling against the panel line

When to Use Intermediate Posts

Standard spacing works on moderate ground. Add intermediate posts when the terrain drops or rises sharply mid-panel, when you’re seeing panel bow or sag after installation, when soil is sandy or loose, or when you’re running smaller livestock that will test every weak point in the line. An extra post costs less than repairing a blown panel or chasing escaped livestock.
