- Sheep and goats: 8 to 10 feet handles most flock movement, wider at sorting points
- Horses: 10 feet minimum, 12 feet preferred; horses spook at tight entries and can injure themselves on gates they clip
If you’re running mixed species, size to the largest animal and the highest-traffic scenario. Undersized gates cost you time twice: once going in, once coming out.

Swing gates are the standard for most permanent paddock access. They’re fast to operate, straightforward to latch properly, and available in the widths and gauges most operations need.
Tube panel gates used as swing gates work well in temporary or reconfigurable layouts. They’re heavier per foot than purpose-built swing gates, but they give you flexibility if your paddock map changes between grazing seasons.
Sliding gates are worth considering where swing clearance is limited: tight laneways, barn entries, or spots where the ground slopes toward the gate opening. They add mechanical complexity but solve real problems in the right situation.
What to Prioritize When Buying

Gauge and finish come first: heavier gauge galvanized steel outlasts lighter alternatives in high-use settings.
